At least 15 people were killed, and 15 others injured during a stampede at New Delhi's main train station on Saturday evening as pilgrims rushed to board a train to the Maha Kumbh Hindu festival in Prayagraj, northern India. The incident occurred around 8 PM local time, according to Delhi's Chief Minister Atishi, who stated that many victims were en route to the festival. Eyewitness Dharmender Singh described the scene as “a huge crowd,” emphasizing the chaos.
Local media reports indicated that among those deceased, ten were women and three were children. The bodies were transported to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain Hospital for identification. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and noted he was "distressed" by the incident on the social media platform X.
Authorities, including Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced an investigation into the causes of the stampede, which follows a previous tragic incident last month where at least 30 people died during the festival itself, amid large crowds gathered for religious rituals.
