BBC Team Detained at Gunpoint by Israeli Forces in Southern Syria

A suicide bomber attacked the Mar Elias Church in Dweil'a, on the outskirts of Damascus, Syria, on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of at least nine people, according to Syrian state media. The assault occurred during a religious service, with additional reports indicating that at least 15 others were injured.
Witnesses described a scene of chaos, with the attacker reportedly firing into the church before detonating an explosives vest. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported a higher toll, claiming up to 30 were wounded or killed. Amid ongoing efforts by President Ahmad al-Sharaa's government to consolidate support from minority groups, this incident marks the first church bombing in Syria in several years.
The Syrian Interior Ministry attributed the attack to an extremist linked to the Islamic State group, although no organization has formally claimed responsibility. Syrian Information Minister Hamza Mostafa condemned the attack, emphasizing the government's commitment to combat extremist threats and ensure societal safety. As security forces responded to the scene, distress was palpable among the survivors and first responders.
