Student Suicides in Kota Raise Concerns as Two Aspiring Engineers Take Their Lives in 24 Hours
In a distressing turn of events, two students preparing for India's prestigious Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) have died by suicide in Kota, Rajasthan, within a 24-hour period. The first incident involved a 19-year-old student found hanging in his hostel room, followed by the tragic case of 20-year-old Abhishek Lodha, who left a note expressing his belief that he would not succeed in the exam.
Lodha, originally from Guna, Madhya Pradesh, had moved to Kota last May for coaching. In his note, he stated, "I'm unable to study. I am preparing for the JEE exams, but it's beyond me. Sorry." Despite being academically capable and stating he felt everything was fine, his family noted that he had not voiced any concerns about his studies.
The local police indicated that both cases appear to stem from exam-related stress. Mukesh Meena, the in-charge of Vigyan Nagar police station, mentioned the need for further investigation, particularly regarding the lack of safety equipment in Lodha's accommodation.
Rajasthan's Kota, known as a hub for competitive exam preparation, has seen fluctuations in student suicide rates, with a notable decrease last year. However, the recent incidents have reignited debates about the pressures faced by students in this intense academic environment.
