Daljit Singh, a resident of Kurala Kalan village in Punjab's Hoshiarpur district, shared his traumatic experience after being deported from the United States. Singh, among 116 illegal Indian immigrants returned on a US aircraft, described being "handcuffed with legs chained" during their flight back.
The deportees were part of a crackdown by the Trump administration aimed at illegal immigrants. Singh recounted how he was lured by a travel agent who promised a direct flight to the US but ultimately led him on the perilous 'donkey route' instead. His wife, Kamalpreet Kaur, claimed that the agent deceived her husband, raising concerns over the prevailing exploitation of migrants seeking better opportunities.
The flight landed at Amritsar airport late on Saturday night, and the deportees were subsequently transported home by police. Among this latest group, 65 hailed from Punjab, with others coming from states like Haryana and Gujarat. Many deportees reported being drawn to the US for better prospects, only to find their dreams dashed by fraud and misrepresentation, as stated by officials.
