Lebanon Blocks Iranian Flights Amid Israeli Concerns

Protests erupted outside Beirut's Rafic Hariri International Airport on February 14, 2025, as demonstrators blocked access with burning tires following the cancellation of a flight from Iran. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that protesters expressed anger towards the government and airport authorities for allegedly yielding to Israeli pressure to cancel the flight.
According to Lebanon's civil aviation agency, "additional security measures" have resulted in the temporary rescheduling of some flights until February 18, coinciding with a deadline for the implementation of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.
An Israeli military statement claimed that Iran and Hezbollah are "exploiting Beirut Airport and civilian flights" to smuggle funds to support terrorist activities against Israel. Lebanon’s parliamentary speaker, Nabih Berri, asserted that the country rejected an Israeli demand to maintain a military presence in five locations in southern Lebanon after the deadline. He emphasized that the U.S. mediator confirmed an Israeli withdrawal from these locations by February 18.
