Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India is prepared to bring back its citizens living illegally in the United States, emphasizing the need to combat human trafficking. His comments came during a press conference in New Delhi, a week after 104 Indians were deported back to India, an event that sparked significant controversy.
Modi highlighted that those who enter a country illegally have no right to reside there, a statement that he believes applies globally. "The young, vulnerable, and poor people of India are fooled into immigration," Modi said, stressing that many are deceived by false promises and often find themselves in human trafficking networks.
Additionally, Modi and US President Donald Trump discussed collaborative efforts to dismantle these trafficking ecosystems. Trump confirmed the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a convict in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, demonstrating the US commitment to cooperating with India in counter-terrorism efforts. The two leaders also announced agreements on energy imports and the establishment of comprehensive trade routes connecting India, Israel, Italy, and the US.
