UNICEF Reports Alarming Rise in Child Rape Cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has escalated, resulting in over 900 fatalities and approximately 3,000 injuries, as reported by humanitarian organizations. Goma, a city with a population of two million, has become a battleground after the March 23 Movement (M23) rebel group seized control, prompting international concern and calls for intervention.
According to reports from BBC, the M23, which is primarily composed of members of the Tutsi ethnic group, claims to fight for the rights and safety of their community. However, multiple sources suggest that the group is motivated by the desire to exploit the region's rich natural resources, such as coltan, gold, nickel, cobalt, and copper. The United Nations has indicated the presence of approximately 4,000 Rwandan soldiers supporting the M23, further complicating the conflict.
In response to the violence, a regional crisis summit is scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Dar es Salaam, with DRC President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame expected to attend, alongside representatives from Kenya and Uganda.
