INIndia|

During a high-profile meeting on February 14, 2025, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump emphasized enhanced cooperation in law enforcement and organized crime amidst escalating tensions regarding Khalistani separatist activities. This meeting follows accusations from the US alleging involvement of an ex-Indian intelligence officer in a failed assassination plot against Khalistani leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in the US.

According to the joint statement after the meeting, both leaders aim to combat narco-terrorism, human and arms trafficking, and other threats to national security. These discussions occur against a backdrop of previous allegations from Canadian officials, including former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, suggesting Indian involvement in the 2023 killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.

Additionally, Trump announced the US approval for the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, linked to the 2008 Mumbai attacks, further tightening security collaborations between the nations. India's Ministry of Home Affairs, which has cooperated with US investigations, indicated imminent legal action against individuals connected to organized criminal activities, although specific identities were not revealed.

WHO Issues Warning on Deadly Fungus Aspergillus Fumigatus

The World Health Organization (WHO) has flagged the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus as a serious public health threat, particularly as COVID-19 cases resurge globally. This fungus, known to cause the severe disease aspergillosis, primarily targets the lungs and can spread to the brain in severe instances, with a fatality rate of 85.2% for invasive cases. Experts caution that it poses a heightened risk to individuals with compromised immune systems. According to a report from the Daily Star, the WHO fears the fungus could potentially expand into North America, Europe, China, and Russia, worsening the public health landscape. A study conducted by Manchester University predicts that by 2100, Aspergillus fumigatus could invade 77% more geographical areas, endangering millions globally. The fungus thrives in warm, moist environments, making it challenging to diagnose and treat. Norman van Rijn, the lead researcher, emphasized the under-researched status of fungal threats compared to viruses and parasites, noting the potential for increased global infection rates in the future.
