Recent naval drills involving the United States and its allies near the Philippines have led to strong objections from China, which asserts that it has sovereignty over the entire South China Sea. According to the U.S. 7th Fleet, military forces from Australia, Japan, the Philippines, and the U.S. conducted a “multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity” within the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone this week. The goal of the exercises, which included joint patrols, was to enhance interoperability between allied defense forces, as stated by the fleet.
China's Southern Theater Command has accused the Philippines of collaborating with foreign powers to disrupt regional stability, emphasizing that such actions undermine China's maritime claims. Despite Beijing's warnings, additional exercises involving U.S., Japanese, and French forces are slated for the coming days in the broader region. These exercises aim to promote coordination among maritime forces and demonstrate capabilities for multi-domain operations. The South China Sea is crucial for international trade, with an estimated $5 trillion in goods passing through it annually, but has been the center of ongoing territorial disputes.
