US and India Collaborate on Higher Education Initiatives

In a significant step towards enhancing bilateral ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump have agreed to promote academic collaborations between India and the United States. The leaders discussed establishing joint educational programs, including dual degrees and Centres of Excellence, during their meeting at the White House on February 14, 2025.

The joint statement emphasized the value of the Indian student community in the US, which consists of over 300,000 individuals and contributes approximately $8 billion to the US economy annually. This collaboration aims to foster innovation and support the development of a workforce ready for future challenges.

Modi highlighted the importance of the Indian diaspora, stating that new Indian consulates will be opened in Los Angeles and Boston to strengthen people-to-people ties. He further invited American universities to establish offshore campuses in India, a move welcomed by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who stressed the potential for boosting knowledge cooperation between the two countries.

This initiative is expected to deepen educational ties and create numerous opportunities for students and researchers in both nations.
