European Leaders See Opportunity for Ukraine-Russia Talks as Trump Enters the Fray

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Major General Mykhailo Drapati as the new commander of the Chortizja Regional Command, covering the eastern front from Kharkiv to Donetsk, amidst escalating Russian advances in the Donbass region. This decision follows the capture of the strategic city of Welika Nowosilka by Russian forces, which has intensified the threat to key Ukrainian defense positions such as Torezk and Chasiv Yar.
Drapati, a seasoned officer with a decade of combat experience, gained recognition for breaking a blockade in Mariupol in 2014. He has been pivotal in various defensive operations throughout the years, recently overseeing defense efforts in Kryvyi Rih and Odessa. His leadership style is marked by transparency and reforms in recruitment and training, aimed at addressing long-standing issues, including corruption within the military.
However, experts caution that Drapati faces significant challenges, as the Ukrainian military grapples with an insufficient infantry and coordination issues among units. The pressure on Ukrainian forces is at its peak, and a strategic retreat from Welika Nowosilka raises concerns about further territorial losses.
