UK Athletics and Former Official Charged with Manslaughter Following Paralympian's Death
UK Athletics and a former official have been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of 36-year-old Paralympian Abdullah Hayayei. Hayayei, who represented the United Arab Emirates, tragically died after being struck on the head by a metal pole during a training session at Newham Leisure Centre in east London on July 11, 2017.
The incident occurred as Hayayei was preparing for the World Para Athletics Championships, where he was set to compete in the discus, javelin, and shot put events. Following an investigation, police and the Crown Prosecution Service announced that Keith Davies, a 77-year-old former head of sport at UK Athletics, has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter and a health and safety violation.
UK Athletics itself faces charges of corporate manslaughter and a health and safety offence. Both Davies and UK Athletics are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on January 31, 2025, to respond to the charges.
