Deadly Building Collapse in Bangkok After Major Earthquake

Pe Kha Lau, a 71-year-old refugee from Myanmar, died shortly after being discharged from a USAID-funded hospital that halted operations due to a U.S. foreign aid freeze. According to her family, Lau was dependent on oxygen, and her condition deteriorated after the International Rescue Committee (IRC) received a "stop-work" order in late January. The freeze, which will last for 90 days, has severely impacted aid projects in Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, where Lau resided in a camp housing over 10,000 refugees fleeing Myanmar's civil war. Reports indicate that multiple patients reliant on oxygen have died in similar circumstances. Health workers criticized the abrupt closure of facilities, which has left patients without necessary care, underscoring that many programs continue to face uncertainty regarding funding waivers. A doctor working in Myanmar described the freeze as demonstrating a lack of respect for human life. USAID’s partners remain in limbo as organizations await guidance on what assistance can resume, while local authorities struggle to fill the gaps left by the halted functions.
