Twenty People Missing After Boat Capsizes Off Libya's Coast
A tragic incident has unfolded off the coast of Libya, where twenty individuals are missing after falling from a small boat that began to take on water in rough seas. The six-meter vessel, which departed Zuwara, Libya, at 10 PM on Monday, was carrying 27 passengers when it started to tilt around five hours into its journey.
Survivors, who were later rescued by an Italian police patrol off the southern island of Lampedusa, recounted the chaotic scene that ensued as the boat tilted. Among the missing are five women and three children, with one survivor being an eight-year-old boy from Syria. Authorities have reported that the survivors include individuals from Syria, Egypt, and Sudan.
Initial fears suggested that the boat had capsized close to Lampedusa, prompting an overnight search and rescue operation by Italian police and coastguard in the surrounding waters. However, these efforts have now been called off as the search yielded no further findings.
In a separate incident, a vessel off the northern Tunisian coast broke down, leading to the deaths of two, including a five-year-old child, while 17 others survived. Alarm Phone, a distress hotline for migrants at sea, expressed its sorrow over the rising death toll, stating, "So many people have needlessly died and disappeared."
Italian authorities have informed their counterparts in Libya and Malta about the situation, as the region continues to grapple with the challenges of migration across the Mediterranean.
