Former U.S. President Donald Trump has called for the federal government to assume control of Washington, D.C., citing rising crime and homelessness. Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump criticized the city's Democratic Mayor, Muriel Bowser, asserting, "They're not doing the job — too much crime, too much graffiti, too many tents on the lawns." He emphasized the need for strong governance to restore safety and order in the capital, which has a population of approximately 700,000 residents.
Trump expressed concern about the city's reputation, especially with upcoming visits from foreign leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. "You can't have tents over your once magnificent plazas and lawns," he noted.
This statement follows a recent proposal by two Republican lawmakers to repeal the city's Home Rule Act, a move aimed at diminishing the mayor's authority. Senator Mike Lee claimed that the local government has been an "embarrassment" due to its handling of crime and corruption. In response to Trump, Mayor Bowser highlighted Washington's status as a "world-class city" on social media.
