French Surgeon Sentenced to 20 Years for Sexual Abuse of Hundreds of Children

A 31-year-old educational assistant was fatally stabbed by a 14-year-old student on June 10, 2025, during a backpack search at a secondary school in Nogent, northeastern France. The victim was hospitalized in critical condition but succumbed to her injuries shortly after. The student was promptly apprehended by gendarmes conducting the search at the entrance of the school.
This incident has raised serious concerns regarding escalating violence in French schools, prompting President Emmanuel Macron to condemn it as “a wave of senseless violence” and asserting that the government is committed to reducing crime. The Minister of Education, Elisabeth Borne, stated that the assailant did not exhibit any known behavioral issues, revealing a troubling trend of youth violence that has resulted in over 10,000 knife attacks in educational settings across the country in 2024 alone.
The attack has sparked intense debate about school safety measures and the effectiveness of recent increases in security checks, including random weapon screenings in schools. Prime Minister François Bayrou remarked that this violence reflects a broader societal issue, calling for a holistic response to the mental health challenges faced by youth.
