Top Maoist Leader Jayaram Reddy Killed After Decades on the Run
Jayaram Reddy, a prominent Maoist leader also known as Chalapati, was killed in a joint operation by central and state police forces along the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border. Reddy had evaded capture for years, carrying a bounty of Rs 1 crore for his involvement in multiple violent incidents, including the lethal 2008 attack in Nayagarh, Odisha, that resulted in the deaths of 13 security personnel.
His downfall came after a selfie with his wife, Aruna, was discovered on an abandoned smartphone, leading police to identify and track him. The picture, recovered following a 2016 encounter with security forces, sparked increased focus from law enforcement, forcing Reddy to adopt stricter security measures.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah called the recent operation a significant victory against Naxalism, emphasizing the government’s commitment to eradicate Maoist insurgency by March 2026. This encounter has reportedly contributed to a rising body count of Maoists, with at least 40 killed in encounters in Chhattisgarh this year alone.
As security forces continue their efforts, many believe this success marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing battle against Maoist influences in India.
