Ticketless Passenger Survives 30 km Ride on German High-Speed Train's Exterior
In an extraordinary incident on January 19, 2025, a 40-year-old Hungarian man clung to the exterior of a high-speed ICE train for approximately 30 kilometers after being locked out during a cigarette break. The man had boarded the train in Munich without a valid ticket but stepped off at Ingolstadt station for a smoke. When he attempted to reboard, he found the doors had closed, leaving him stranded.
In a desperate act, he climbed onto a bracket between two carriages and grasped onto the cables as the train raced towards Nuremberg at speeds reaching 282 km/h. Witnesses quickly alerted authorities, prompting the train driver to make an unscheduled halt at Kinding in Upper Bavaria.
The passenger reported that he left his luggage on the train and did not want to abandon it. Fortunately, he was unharmed during the incident. A state police officer on board located him and provided assistance, escorting him back onto the train. He was subsequently handed over to federal police at Nuremberg central station, where he is expected to face charges for disruptive behavior.
Federal police have since issued a warning, reminding the public not to engage in dangerous activities on trains.
