Sudanese Civil War Leads to Devastating Humanitarian Crisis

The Al-Jaili Petroleum Refinery, located 70 kilometers north of Khartoum, has suffered significant damage due to ongoing conflicts in Sudan, according to newly released satellite images. On January 27, 2025, the Sudanese army announced it had regained control of the refinery, the nation’s largest, which has been under the control of the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since an uprising began in April 2023 (Forrest Rogers and Cian Jochem). The facility has a production capacity of 100,000 barrels of oil per day and is co-owned by the Sudanese government and the China National Petroleum Corporation.
The ongoing violence has led to accusations against the RSF for deliberately targeting essential infrastructure, including power plants and hospitals. Both conflicting parties have traded blame for the recent fires at the refinery, following airstrikes conducted by the army on RSF positions nearby.
The civil war in Sudan has resulted in an estimated 130,000 fatalities and displaced over 14 million people, reports an academic study. Recent drone strikes in Darfur killed 70 individuals, with both the RSF and the army denying responsibility. Diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire have so far failed to yield results amidst the deteriorating humanitarian crisis.
