Violence Erupts in Sudan's Zamzam Camp, Displacing Thousands Amid Atrocities

The United Nations has condemned recent violence in southern Sudan, where clashes between the Sudanese army and a faction of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) have resulted in at least 80 deaths in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan. The fighting, which erupted last week, is exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation in the region, according to UN humanitarian coordinator Clementine Nkweta-Salami.
On February 6, 2025, Nkweta-Salami highlighted the reported use of women and children as human shields and the obstruction of humanitarian assistance as major violations in the conflict. The ongoing war between Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has displaced nearly 12 million people and left approximately 26 million facing acute food insecurity since April 2023.
The UN reports that around half a million people are nearing famine in South Kordofan and Blue Nile, with parts of the Nuba Mountains already declared in a state of famine. The escalating violence poses significant threats to aid efforts and worsens already critical food shortages in the area.
