Strong 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Tremors Felt Across Northern India
A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale hit Tibet near the Nepalese border on January 7, 2025, at 6:35 AM IST. The tremors were felt in several parts of India, particularly in the states of Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal.
The National Centre for Seismology reported that two additional aftershocks occurred shortly after the initial quake. The second quake measured 4.7 in magnitude and was recorded at 7:02 AM, followed by a third quake with a magnitude of 4.9 at 7:07 AM. Both aftershocks had depths of 10 km and 30 km, respectively.
Reports indicate that residents of Bihar felt the tremors significantly, prompting many to evacuate their homes in fear. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries in the affected areas.
The region is known for its geological activity due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which frequently results in earthquakes.
Further updates on the situation are expected as authorities continue to monitor the aftermath.
