South Korea's Constitutional Court Removes President Yoon Suk Yeol Following Controversial Martial Law Declaration

An eight-year-old student was fatally stabbed by her teacher at an elementary school in Daejeon, South Korea, on Monday evening, according to local media reports. The woman, in her 40s, confessed to the crime after both she and the student were found with stab wounds by police officers responding to a missing persons report filed by the child's parents. The girl was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Reports indicate that the teacher had previously taken a leave of absence due to depression before returning to work late last year. Officials believe some of the wounds on the teacher's neck and arm may have been self-inflicted, as noted by Yonhap news agency. The girl had been at school for after-class care prior to a scheduled private art class.
Despite South Korea's generally low murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 people in 2021, the country has recently experienced several high-profile violent incidents, raising concerns about safety in schools, as cited by authorities.
