Philippines Authorities Search Taal Lake for Missing Gamblers Amid Cockfighting Scandal

Authorities in the Philippines have launched a search for 34 missing men believed to have been killed following allegations of cheating during livestreamed cockfights during the COVID-19 pandemic. The men, reported missing between April 2021 and January 2022, are suspected to have been disposed of in Taal Lake, according to local media reports.
The investigation has focused on six security guards accused of kidnapping the victims after they participated in e-sabong, a popular online form of cockfighting. One suspect, identified only as "Totoy," has claimed in a recent interview that more than 100 bodies could be recovered if searches are conducted in the lake.
Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla stated that divers equipped with technical support will be deployed to Taal Lake to uncover potential remains. He emphasized the need for accountability in these serious allegations. As the search intensifies, authorities are also seeking additional witnesses to corroborate the claims of foul play, with five potential witnesses already interviewed (Philstar, BBC).
