Putin Claims Control Over Ukrainian Forces in Kursk as Tensions Escalate

Thousands of Russian scientists are abandoning their posts as the government tightens its grip on academia, according to the independent outlet Novaya Gazeta Europe. An estimated 2,500 researchers left Russia by the end of 2023 amid the country's increasing prioritization of pseudoscientific claims over legitimate scientific inquiry.
This exodus was prompted by President Vladimir Putin's "Decade of Science and Technology" initiative, which has repurposed scientific endeavors to align with nationalist ideologies. The first nationwide science dictation aimed at promoting Soviet scientific achievements was held on February 8, highlighting the regime's shift toward a state-controlled narrative of history and research.
Key figures, including Viktor Sadovnichy and Mikhail Kovalchuk, propagate state-approved ideologies. Kovalchuk has controversially discussed the development of ethnic weapons, while Sadovnichy has publicly endorsed military actions against Ukraine. As rigorous scientific discourse suffers under repression, the legitimacy of Russia’s scientific progress remains in question.
The continuous repression of dissent and manipulation of science in service of political ends has further exacerbated the decline of Russia's academic institutions, leaving them isolated from the global scientific community.
