Experts warn that far-right parties in Europe, such as Germany's Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) and France's National Rally, are on track to become the dominant force on the political right within the next decade. According to the Observer, this shift is partly driven by mainstream conservative parties adopting hardline immigration policies in an attempt to regain lost votes. Recently, AfD leader Alice Weidel celebrated a historic vote in the Bundestag that endorsed drastic immigration measures, indicating a shift in political dynamics as Germany's conservative bloc aligns with far-right views.
Political analysts highlight that this trend leads to a “vicious cycle” where accommodating far-right ideologies only legitimizes and strengthens these parties. Tarik Abou-Chadi from the University of Oxford noted that when mainstream parties shift right, they fail to win back electoral support and instead empower radical voices.
Countries like the Netherlands and Italy have already experienced the dominance of far-right parties, and this pattern is anticipated to continue across Europe. Observers caution that mainstream parties must reconsider their strategies or risk being overtaken by these increasingly influential far-right movements.
