Rescue Efforts Ongoing as Eight Miners Remain Trapped in Flooded Assam Mine
One body has been recovered, and eight miners are still trapped following a flooding incident at a 340-foot deep "rat-hole" mine in Assam. The event occurred on Monday when water surged into the mining site, prompting extensive rescue operations involving the Navy and local authorities.
Survivors have recounted harrowing experiences, with one miner, H Islam, describing how he escaped as water gushed in, carrying him to safety. Unfortunately, he noted that many workers lacked safety gear during the incident, highlighting the hazardous conditions they face.
The Ministry of Defence has deployed a Navy team with trained clearance divers to assist in the rescue attempts. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that additional de-watering pumps are being sent to the site, while divers from the Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are also actively involved in the rescue efforts.
Despite these efforts, officials have indicated that the chances of finding the trapped miners alive are slim, as water levels continue to rise in the mine.
