Violence Erupts in Sudan's Zamzam Camp, Displacing Thousands Amid Atrocities

A paramilitary force in Sudan has reportedly stormed the largest displacement camp in the country, known as Zamzam, situated near el-Fasher, resulting in looting and arson, according to the Sudanese IDPs and Refugees Bloc. The attack occurred despite the camp hosting approximately 500,000 individuals already suffering from famine conditions. Eyewitnesses labeled the situation as "extremely catastrophic," noting a lack of operational medical facilities at the camp.
The incident marks the first time the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been directly accused of attacking Zamzam, although the camp has faced significant artillery strikes since late 2022. Official claims from RSF spokespeople deny the accusations, asserting that their forces were engaged in conflicts with an armed group linked to the Sudanese military.
Health Minister Ibrahim Abdullah Khater indicated that injured persons could not access medical treatment in el-Fasher, as RSF troops obstructed routes. International non-governmental organizations have warned that increasing violence has eliminated safe havens for displaced individuals across North Darfur, exacerbating a dire humanitarian crisis.
