Ronalyn Carbonel, a storm survivor from Rizal, Philippines, participated in a Greenpeace protest outside Shell's headquarters in London, urging accountability from major polluters. Carbonel, whose family endured a harrowing two days on their roof during a recent storm, shared her experiences with The Guardian, emphasizing the growing severity of typhoons attributed to climate change.
The Philippines has faced increasingly violent storms, with last year’s record-breaking season alone bringing six typhoons in just a month, affecting over 13 million people and incurring damages estimated at $500 million. Carbonel showcased personal belongings destroyed in the storms, which were displayed in glass cases during the protest to symbolize the real impact of climate change.
Maja Darlington, a Greenpeace climate campaigner, criticized Shell for profiting from fossil fuels while contributing to environmental destruction. Bon Gibalay, a youth leader from Bohol, reiterated the need for justice, stating that communities like theirs suffer while corporations thrive. Carbonel expressed hope for global awareness and the responsibility of powerful companies in mitigating climate change.
