Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has proposed the removal of a U.S. missile system from the Philippines if China ceases its "aggressive and coercive behavior" in the contested South China Sea. During a press briefing on January 30, 2025, Marcos stated, "Let’s make a deal with China... and we’ll return the Typhoon missiles," referring to the U.S. Army's mobilization of the mid-range Typhon missile system installed in April 2024 (AP).
The U.S. missile system, which can deliver Tomahawk missiles over 1,600 kilometers, was recently repositioned closer to Manila amid escalating tensions between Chinese and Philippine naval forces in the region. Marcos' comments come in response to China’s calls for the missile system's removal, which Beijing claims incites regional tensions. Officials from the People's Republic did not respond immediately to Marcos' offer (The Associated Press).
Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro has dismissed China's demands as interference in domestic matters, emphasizing the country's sovereignty amid growing maritime confrontations involving multiple claims in the South China Sea.
