Pakistan Confirms Participation in India Meteorological Department's 150th Anniversary Celebrations
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is set to celebrate its 150th anniversary with a significant event, inviting officials from countries that were part of undivided India. Notable attendees include representatives from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. Pakistan has confirmed its participation, while the IMD is awaiting a response from Bangladesh.
The celebrations will feature various activities such as marathons, exhibitions, workshops, and olympiads, aimed at showcasing the vibrancy of India's weather system. Additionally, the Ministry of Finance has approved a special commemorative coin to mark this milestone. For the first time, the IMD will also present a tableau during the Republic Day parade.
Established in 1875, the IMD was founded after severe weather events highlighted the need for enhanced weather forecasting. Through the years, it has evolved into a leader in meteorological science, becoming the first developing nation to launch its own geostationary satellite for continuous weather monitoring.
The event marks a historic occasion, reflecting on the IMD’s pivotal role in weather prediction and scientific advancements over the past one and a half centuries.
