Outrage in India After Journalist's Body Found in Septic Tank
Indian media rights groups are demanding a thorough investigation following the discovery of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar's body in a septic tank in Bijapur, Chhattisgarh. The 32-year-old freelance journalist, known for his reporting on corruption in the construction industry, had been reported missing on New Year’s Day.
Chandrakar's body was located at a construction contractor's compound, where police noted signs of a violent attack. Officers suspect his death may be connected to a recent investigation he conducted into an alleged road construction scam in the area, which had led to police inquiries. So far, three individuals have been arrested in connection with his death, while one suspect, Suresh Chandrakar, has yet to be apprehended.
The incident has sparked protests from local journalists and press organizations, highlighting the dangers facing reporters in India. The Press Council of India has called for immediate action and a factual report on the case. Chhattisgarh's Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed sorrow over the incident and vowed to ensure severe punishment for those responsible.
With 28 journalists murdered in the past decade, India remains one of the most perilous countries for media professionals, according to Reporters Without Borders.
