US Aid Freeze Puts Ukraine in Economic Crisis Amid Ongoing War

A Ukrainian commander has described North Korean soldiers deployed to Russia's Kursk region as being treated as "cannon fodder" during combat. According to Konoval Ihor Ihorovych, commander of the 4th Company's 33rd Assault Regiment, North Korean troops displayed confusing behaviors reminiscent of World War II tactics, including charging forward despite artillery fire without proper command (Business Insider).
Approximately 11,000 North Korean soldiers were sent to aid Russian forces in countering Ukrainian advances initiated in August 2024. Ihorovych recalled an encounter with North Korean troops who were "running back and forth between buildings" under heavy fire, indicating a lack of training and leadership. Ukrainian forces reportedly did not suffer losses during their engagements (Business Insider).
Western intelligence assessments estimate that around 4,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed or wounded since deployment. Analysts warn that if casualties continue at this rate, Pyongyang could rapidly deplete its available combat forces in the region (Institute for the Study of War).
