Thomas Pham LeGro, a 48-year-old journalist with the Washington Post, was arrested on charges of possessing child pornography following an FBI investigation. Sergio Pena, 39, was found guilty of sexual battery and child abuse by a Duval County jury on June 25, stemming from crimes committed against an 11-year-old victim between April and June 2008. According to court records, Pena was frequently left alone with the victim after school, where he repeatedly assaulted her. The abuse came to light when the victim began exhibiting signs of pregnancy months later, prompting her to disclose the incidents to her mother, who reported it to the authorities. Pena, who fled Jacksonville shortly after the crimes, became a fugitive with an arrest warrant issued in 2008 due to his illegal immigration status. He was apprehended on May 10, 2023, while illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona. Following the guilty verdict, Pena faces a mandatory life sentence, with his sentencing scheduled for July 28.
