New Year’s Eve Violence in Germany Leads to Hundreds of Arrests
On New Year’s Eve, Germany experienced a surge in violence during celebrations, resulting in over 400 arrests primarily in Berlin. The German government condemned the incidents where police officers and firefighters were attacked, with 30 police officers and one firefighter sustaining injuries from fireworks. Despite the traditional use of fireworks to welcome the New Year, this year's festivities saw a disturbing trend of fireworks being directed at emergency responders.
In addition to the injuries, five fatalities were reported, alongside hundreds of injuries attributed to the hazardous use of fireworks. The city’s fire department noted that powerful illegal fireworks caused significant damage in Berlin, leaving 36 apartments uninhabitable and shattering numerous windows.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser highlighted the necessity of deploying a strong police presence to combat the violence. She assured the public that all individuals responsible for the attacks would face severe legal consequences and expressed hope for a swift recovery for the injured officers. The incidents have drawn attention to the need for stricter control of fireworks use in public celebrations.
