Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Group is set to construct a groundbreaking data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, estimated to reach 3 gigawatts (GW) in capacity, making it the largest globally, according to Bloomberg. This facility will reportedly be five times larger than Microsoft’s 600 megawatt site in Virginia and is projected to be completed by 2027.
Reliance aims to power the data center primarily using renewable energy sourced from its existing solar, wind, and green hydrogen projects. However, achieving a consistent energy supply may require backup from fossil fuels, as noted by industry analysts. The financial outlay for this ambitious project is expected to be between $20 billion and $30 billion. While Reliance's balance sheet indicates approximately $26 billion, further details on funding remain unclear.
Nvidia will supply AI chips for the development, aligning with a growing global trend as tech firms escalate investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure. The Jamnagar data center is expected to significantly enhance India's data center capabilities, which currently stands at under 1 GW.
