Rediscovered "Living Fossil" Echidna Amazes Scientists in Indonesia

A significant volcanic eruption occurred at Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki on Flores island, eastern Indonesia, on Tuesday, prompting the cancellation of numerous flights to and from Bali. According to the Volcanology Agency, the volcano erupted at 5:35 PM local time, releasing an ash plume that reached approximately 10,000 meters into the atmosphere. In response, officials elevated the disaster alert level to the highest tier of a four-tiered system.
Airlines such as Virgin Australia, Jetstar, and Air New Zealand reported flight cancellations due to safety concerns related to the volcanic ash cloud. "Safety is always our first priority," stated Air New Zealand regarding their decision to monitor the situation closely.
While there have been no immediate reports of damages or casualties, residents and tourists have been advised to stay at least 7 kilometers away from the crater. Muhammad Wafid, the head of the geology agency, warned of potential lahar floods following heavy rains and urged locals to wear masks to protect against ash inhalation. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency also confirmed that some villages have begun evacuating.
