Millions of Pilgrims Gather for Maha Kumbh Mela Festival in India
Over 20 million Hindu pilgrims have already participated in the sacred bathing rituals of the Maha Kumbh Mela, taking place in Prayagraj, India. The festival, occurring every 12 years, attracts more than 400 million visitors, making it one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
Pilgrims believe that bathing in the holy waters of the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers during the festival absolves them of sins and grants salvation. This year’s event began on January 14 and will continue for six weeks.
Amrit Abhijat, Principal Secretary of Urban Development, noted that the gathering has been peaceful thus far, with significant logistical arrangements in place, including hundreds of thousands of toilets and community kitchens catering to the massive influx of visitors.
The Kumbh Mela has historical roots in Hindu tradition, where a celestial battle led to drops of elixir of immortality falling to Earth, resulting in the establishment of four festival cities. This auspicious gathering draws participants from all walks of life, eager to partake in the unique spiritual experience.
As the Kumbh Mela unfolds, local authorities and organizers are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all attendees.
