Microsoft has announced the development of its new AI system, the MAI Diagnostic Orchestrator, which reportedly diagnoses patients four times more accurately than human doctors. This claim stems from an experiment that used 304 case studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine, leading to a significant accuracy rate of 80% for the AI tool, compared to just 20% for physicians.
Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft's AI arm, referred to this as a significant advancement toward "medical superintelligence.” The system synthesizes multiple AI models, such as OpenAI's GPT and Google’s Gemini, to mimic the diagnostic processes of human experts. Additionally, it reportedly lowers healthcare costs by selecting less expensive tests and procedures.
Despite the promising results, experts urge caution. David Sontag from MIT emphasized that the diagnostic performance of human doctors in the study may not accurately reflect real-world practices where additional resources are often utilized. Researchers advocate for further validation through clinical trials to evaluate the practicality and effectiveness of the AI tool in real patient scenarios.
