Crisis Deepens as Over 200 Health Facilities Close in Afghanistan

Mohammad Sharifullah, a key suspect in the deadly 2021 Kabul airport bombing, was arrested in late February 2025 during a joint operation by the CIA and Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), according to reports. The bombing, which occurred at Abbey Gate, Hamid Karzai International Airport on August 26, 2021, resulted in the deaths of 13 US service members and numerous Afghan civilians and was claimed by ISIS-K.
Sharifullah, also known as “Jafar,” is believed to be a senior commander within ISIS-K and was implicated in planning the attack. According to court documents, Sharifullah joined the terror group in 2016 and assisted the bomber by scoping out routes near the airport. Following his release from prison shortly before the bombing, he confessed to FBI agents about his support for various ISIS-K operations on March 2, 2025.
Intelligence sources have suggested that Pakistan's collaboration with the U.S. to target ISIS-K reflects a strategic shift. The ISI's involvement comes amidst broader complexities in Pakistan's relations with both China and the United States.
