A significant fire broke out late Friday night at the 67-storey Marina Pinnacle building in Dubai, leading to the evacuation of all 3,820 residents from its 764 apartments, according to the Dubai Media Office (DMO). The fire was extinguished after a six-hour operation by the Dubai Civil Defence teams.

Emergency services acted promptly, prioritizing the health and safety of residents during the evacuation, which was completed without any reported injuries, as noted by the Khaleej Times. Ambulances and medical personnel were on-site to provide necessary medical and psychological support to those affected.

This incident marks the second major fire at Marina Pinnacle, also known as Tiger Tower; a previous fire occurred in May 2015 due to a kitchen mishap on the 47th floor. The DMO confirmed that they are collaborating with the building's developer to arrange temporary housing for the evacuated residents. In a statement, a resident praised the efficiency of the UAE's emergency response efforts.

Record Temperatures Slam UAE Amid Concerns Over Climate Change

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is experiencing unprecedented heat, with temperatures reaching 51.6 degrees Celsius (124.9 degrees Fahrenheit) in Sweihan on May 24. This measurement is just below the highest temperature ever recorded in the country since records began in 2003, according to an AFP report. The previous daily record for May was 50.2 degrees Celsius, also exceeded this month, highlighting a trend of increasing extreme temperatures. April saw an average daily high of 42.6 degrees Celsius (108.7 degrees Fahrenheit), also a record for that month. A Greenpeace report released in 2022 warned that the Middle East and North Africa region is "extremely vulnerable" to climate change impacts, emphasizing the urgent need for mitigation strategies. The World Meteorological Organization has projected an 80% chance that at least one year between 2025 and 2029 will surpass current temperature records, raising alarms over the potential to exceed the Paris Agreement target of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Increasing reliance on renewable energy sources, such as solar power, is seen as a critical measure for combating the harmful effects of climate change.
