Maha Kumbh Mela Images Captured from Space Highlight Massive Preparations
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has released satellite images showcasing the extensive preparations for the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. This event, recognized as the largest religious gathering in the world, is expected to draw approximately 400 million visitors over a span of 45 days.
These images reveal a vast temporary infrastructure, including around 150,000 tents, 3,000 kitchens, and 145,000 restrooms. With the Mela occurring from January 13 to February 26, 2025, the area has been transformed into a city, complete with 99 parking lots and newly constructed bathing ghats.
Dr. Prakash Chauhan, Director of the National Remote Sensing Center, detailed how near-infrared and radar technology allowed for the monitoring of the site, even in cloudy conditions. The satellite data will assist local authorities in managing crowd control and preventing potential disasters during the event.
This year’s Mela boasts the newly established Mahakumbh Nagar district to accommodate the influx of pilgrims. The event is not only pivotal for spiritual reasons—offering sacred bathing rituals believed to purify souls—but also exemplifies a convergence of modern technology and cultural tradition.
The government anticipates significant participation as millions seek the spiritual merit of the Kumbh, a festival that rotates every twelve years among four holy sites in India.
