The Kumbh Mela, the largest religious gathering globally, is witnessing unprecedented participation this year, with estimates of over 400 million devotees expected in Prayagraj, India, according to government officials. The festival, held every 12 years across four sacred locations, symbolizes the purification of sins and is central to Hindu beliefs.
This year marks a significant boost in the political and cultural prominence of the akharas, ancient monastic orders of sadhus, with over 10,000 new initiates reported, as stated by Mahant Ravindra Puri, their governing body president. High priests note a renewed interest in the ascetic lifestyle, attributed in part to the Hindu nationalist government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has reinforced Hindu identity within the national framework.
Despite challenges such as a recent tragic crowd crush that resulted in numerous fatalities, the akharas have maintained a cooperative stance with the government. Additionally, for the first time, 1,000 women will be initiated as sadhus, illustrating gradual inclusivity within the traditionally male-dominated institution.
