Ratul Narain, an innovator who grew up in the United States, has developed a temperature-tracking watch named Bempu, which combats hypothermia in newborns. According to reports, hypothermia is a leading cause of mortality among preterm babies, with India recording the highest number of preterm births in 2020. Narain’s device has successfully saved over 100,000 infants globally and has been recognized as one of TIME Magazine’s 25 Best Inventions.
The Bempu watch monitors the temperature of premature babies and alerts caregivers if they are at risk of hypothermia. This innovative approach is part of a larger movement towards improving neonatal care in India, where thousands of newborns are vulnerable.
In an interview, Narain discussed the science behind Bempu and its significant impact on global neonatal health. He emphasized the importance of technology in saving lives and revealed plans to further advance healthcare innovations in India.
Such devices are crucial as neonatal hypothermia continues to threaten the lives of millions every year, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced medical solutions.
