India Protests China's New Counties in Ladakh Region
India lodged a formal protest with China on January 3, 2025, regarding the establishment of two new counties in Hotan prefecture, which encroach upon areas that are part of India's Union Territory of Ladakh. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that India's position on sovereignty in the region remains unchanged and reiterated that India does not recognize China's claimed authority over these territories.
Jaiswal stated, "Creation of new counties will neither have a bearing on India’s long-standing and consistent position regarding our sovereignty over the area nor lend legitimacy to China’s illegal and forcible occupation." He confirmed that the protest was communicated through diplomatic channels.
In addition, India expressed concerns about China's plans to construct a hydropower dam on the Yarlung Zangbo river in Tibet, which has raised alarm due to its potential impact on downstream water supplies in India, particularly affecting Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. New Delhi urged China to consider the implications of the dam on neighboring states and pledged to continue monitoring the situation.
