China Suspends Export of Rare Metals Amid Escalating Trade Tensions with US

Chinese technology giant Huawei announced an impressive revenue of over 860 billion yuan (approximately $118 billion) for 2024, marking a 22% increase from the previous year. This growth is notable given the ongoing U.S. sanctions restricting the company's access to advanced semiconductor technology and global markets. The resurgence was primarily driven by Huawei's consumer business, which has regained traction in the smartphone sector, especially within China.
According to Canalys, Huawei captured a 16% share of China's smartphone market in 2024, surpassing Apple in domestic sales. Additionally, Huawei's smart car solutions unit contributed significantly to its revenue, partnering with Chinese automakers to offer advanced technology for electric vehicles, including autonomous driving software.
The company has also made strides in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, launching its Ascend AI GPUs to support the DeepSeek R1 large language model. AI expert Yuchen Jin noted that the Ascend 910C achieves about 60% of Nvidia's H100 GPU performance, illustrating Huawei's shift towards self-reliance in AI technology.
