Holocaust Survivors Commemorate Auschwitz Liberation with Online Campaign
In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the Jewish Claims Conference has launched an online project titled "I Survived Auschwitz: Remember This." The campaign highlights the stories of 80 Holocaust survivors, focusing on their experiences during Nazi terror and the loss of their families.
Among the survivors featured is 103-year-old Ella Blumenthal, who now resides in South Africa. Blumenthal was born into a Jewish family in Poland, where 23 relatives were murdered by the Nazis. She narrowly escaped death in Auschwitz, surviving a gas chamber due to a last-minute change in the number of Jews scheduled for execution that day.
Judith Hervé-Elkán, who was deported to Auschwitz at the age of 18, shares the harrowing memory of mothers being sent to gas chambers with their children. "The image of a mother dying with her child in her arms is the most horrific sight I still see today," she recalled.
Gideon Taylor, president of the Claims Conference, emphasized the importance of remembering the atrocities committed at Auschwitz, stating that such horrors should never be forgotten and must be conveyed to future generations.
The campaign also includes reflections from survivors like Aron Krell, who recalls his brother's last words: "Please forget me never." Krell, who lost family members to the Nazi regime, highlights the importance of keeping Holocaust memories alive.
The project is available on the Claims Conference's social media channels and website, aiming to educate about the Holocaust and ensure that the memories of those who suffered are honored.
