German Doctor Charged with Murdering 15 Patients

Albrecht Weinberg, a 99-year-old Holocaust survivor, joined hundreds in Leer, East Frisia, to protest against right-wing extremism and advocate for democracy. Alongside photographer Luigi Toscano, Weinberg expressed his determination to stand against anti-Semitism and racism during the event organized by the Leer Alliance for Democracy and Diversity.
Weinberg, who survived Auschwitz, Mittelbau-Dora, and Bergen-Belsen, shared his concerns about contemporary politics, stating, “That this can still happen to me at almost 100 years old is unbelievable.” The demonstration, held in near-freezing temperatures, attracted between 1,500 to 1,800 participants, many of whom carried rainbow flags and signs that read “Democracy without Hooks.”
The protest followed the recent passing of a migration policy proposal in Germany’s Bundestag, backed by the AfD, which prompted Weinberg and Toscano to consider returning their honors from President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Toscano mentioned he has a forthcoming meeting with the president to discuss the matter, reaffirming their intent to surrender their accolades.
