Gunman Kills 12 in Montenegro Shooting Before Taking Own Life
A tragic shooting incident in Cetinje, Montenegro, left at least 12 people dead, including two children, after a gunman opened fire following a bar fight on January 1, 2025. The shooter, identified as 45-year-old Aco Martinovic, killed several individuals at the bar before continuing his rampage at multiple locations.
Authorities reported that the attack commenced around 5:30 PM after Martinovic returned home, retrieved a weapon, and began firing indiscriminately. Among the victims were the owner of the bar, his children, and family members of the shooter.
After the assault, Martinovic fled the scene but was later located by law enforcement. Surrounded by police, he took his own life while being apprehended. Police Commissioner Lazar Scepanovic described Martinovic as having a history of violent behavior and noted that he was previously convicted for illegal weapons possession.
In response to the tragedy, the Montenegrin government has declared a three-day period of national mourning. Prime Minister Milojko Spajic condemned the violence, labeling the event a "terrible tragedy." The incident marks a grim chapter in Montenegro's struggle with gun violence, especially as it is the second mass shooting in Cetinje within three years.
President Jakov Milatovic expressed his shock, highlighting the profound sadness replacing what should have been a festive holiday season.
