Germany Delivers Advanced Artillery Systems to Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict

In a significant development in military support for Ukraine, Germany has delivered its state-of-the-art RCH 155 wheeled howitzers to assist in the ongoing defense against Russian forces. The first unit was handed over in Kassel by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on Monday, January 13, 2025. This artillery system is recognized as the most modern of its kind in the world and comprises a crucial component of a previously announced aid package from Germany.

The RCH 155, developed by the German-French defense contractor KNDS, allows for high mobility and precision, enabling it to fire while on the move. The howitzers are expected to enhance Ukraine's artillery capabilities significantly, with a planned delivery of 54 units, making Ukraine the first operator of this system, ahead of the German armed forces.

Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, Olexi Makejew, emphasized the urgency of modern weaponry for Ukraine, describing the security gaps in the defense as "bleeding wounds." He expressed gratitude for Germany's assistance, noting that it aims to provide support ahead of potential negotiations.

Initially, the delivery of the RCH 155 was scheduled for the previous fall, but logistical challenges have delayed the process. While the first six howitzers are expected to be delivered by the end of the year, full delivery may not occur until 2027.

The new howitzer system can fire up to 30 rounds before needing to be reloaded, with a range of approximately 37 kilometers. Ukraine's training for this advanced artillery will start soon, involving hands-on instruction both in Germany and with the Bundeswehr.

Despite the progress, political tensions remain, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz reported to be stalling additional military aid. The urgency for comprehensive military support is underscored by the protracted conflict, as both Ukraine and Germany's military capabilities continue to be strengthened amidst scrutiny and calls for timely modernization from various political factions.

Holocaust Survivor Returns Honor Amid Rising Far-Right Concerns

Albrecht Weinberg, a 99-year-old Holocaust survivor, has announced his decision to return the Order of Merit he received from Germany in 2017 due to the recent political alliances between the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and far-right parties. Weinberg, who was deported to Auschwitz at 18 and survived three concentration camps, expressed his alarm at the CDU's acceptance of support from the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in pursuing anti-immigration measures. In a phone interview, he remarked, "It’s incredible that we’re back to this," emphasizing the potential for history to repeat itself under the influence of extremist politics. Following a failed anti-immigration bill supported by AfD, he noted that while there is hope, the political climate feels precarious. Weinberg, who has dedicated his post-war life to educating young Germans about the Holocaust, is scheduled to meet with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, although he maintains his decision to return the honor. "The politicians have joined forces with right-wing extremists," he stated, reflecting his concerns about a democracy on the verge of collapse.
