Germany Delivers Advanced Artillery System to Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict
Germany has officially delivered the highly advanced RCH 155 self-propelled howitzer to Ukraine, marking a significant step in the country’s military support. The delivery took place in Kassel, with Ukrainian Ambassador Olexi Makejew stating that Ukraine faces critical security gaps that resemble "bleeding wounds." The new artillery system, developed by the German-French defense company KNDS, is considered the most modern in the world and is designed for high mobility and precision, capable of firing while on the move.
The RCH 155 will enhance Ukraine's defense capabilities against ongoing Russian aggression, with the nation receiving a total of 54 units, becoming the first operator of the system before the German military. This delivery is part of a previously promised aid package which is funded in part by a €7 billion budget allocated for Ukraine for 2024.
While basic training for Ukrainian soldiers is set to begin soon in Kassel and Idar-Oberstein, the full deployment of all systems is expected to take several years. Only six RCH 155 units are scheduled for delivery by the end of this year. Further complications arise over the procurement process for the Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces, which plans to acquire 168 units but has not yet finalized contracts.
Ambassador Makejew emphasized the urgency of their need for modern weaponry, underlining the importance of the relationship with Germany as Ukraine continues to grapple with its security challenges.
Despite these advancements, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is facing scrutiny over delays in providing military aid, with critics stressing the need for a swift response in light of current geopolitical pressures.
